It reminded me of when I was a kid and would borrow a giant stack of books from the library and just read and read and read and read. The story has a distinctive style which I hadn’t seen for a very long time.
I found myself captivated by the story, even though it is aimed for an audience much younger than I currently am (in age… not taste). She meant to bestow a gift”Įlla Enchanted is, well, an enchanting book. “That fool of a fairy Lucinda did not intend to lay a curse on me. Ella is ordered to not tell anyone about the curse, in the fear that they will take advantage of her obedience. When Ella cries, as babies often too, Lucinda decides to give her the ‘gift’ of obedience, meaning that Ella can never disobey a direct order given to her – like ‘stop crying’, ‘go to sleep’ and much worse. This Ella is different.Įlla of Frell is only a baby when she is visited by Lucida, an irritating but well-meaning fairy who likes to bestow ‘gifts’ to inhabitants of the kingdom. But this Ella is not a mere replication of the European folktale, the Grimm Brother’s classic or a Disney character. One such variation of Cinderella is in the story of Ella Enchanted. The character of Cinderella has popped up in numerous variations – Julie Andrews, Brandy, Hilary Duff, Selena Gomez, Drew Barrymore, Anna Kendrick, Jerry Lewis, the Disney film version and a male Cinderella in a children’s book that no one seems to remember but me. Cinderella has her own sociological complex and even a psychological theory known as the Cinderella effect. There have been so many different versions of the popular story: books, movies, operas, ballets, plays, comics, songs, and more. If time started in the 1600s and you ignore the incorrect Disney reference.
Today I’ll be looking at the 1997 novel Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine and its film adaptation Ella Enchanted starring Anne Hathaway and Hugh Dancy, released in 2004.Ĭinderella really is a tale as old as time.
